Girl Friday, 2019 vol. 1

Friends isn’t it time for something frivolous? This week has been exhausting for me mentally - I’ve been at a leadership training in Atlanta. It was a great program but also very intense. I then left Atlanta to come straight here to Houston for ANOTHER leadership retreat that starts tonight and runs through Sunday. Add to that the fact that our President just cannot help himself, my ankles are officially non-existent and I haven’t seen my family since Sunday.

I think it’s time to talk about something else. How was your week?

Here’s the latest installment of Girl Friday, highlighting all things frivolous, girlie and decidedly non-political things I’ve been exploring lately.

The booties that I lusted after during the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale Pre-Access were finally restocked in my size on Wednesday. #praise Let’s just hope that I’m reading the tea leaves correctly and ordered the right size for my post-baby feet.

Like everyone else I’m having a major Lizzo moment right now. Have you listened to her album? It’s so good and I can’t get it out of my head. Good thing my kid hasn’t been around me - because I’m 100 percent that bitch this week.

Looking for a game-changer in your beauty routine? I just had my eyebrows tinted for the first time and it’s amazing. I visited Symmetry Brow Bar on Burnet Road and 15 minutes later Nicola had given me more eyebrows that I every realized was possible. It’s becoming my newest little indulgence every 6 weeks.

In a strange turn of events I’m now the owner of shiny new toaster oven. I blame Amazon Prime Day and my daughter’s love of chicken nuggets. This is adulthood.

If you’re looking for a luxury name jewelry item that’s authentic but won’t break your bank - I introduce you to Old Soul Vintage Jewelry. This website takes zipper pulls, buttons, old earrings, you name it - from authentic luxury handbags and clothing and converts the pieces into handmade jewelry that’s actually affordable. I love that shopping here allows me to support a small creative business, doesn’t break my bank and still gives me my label fix.

I’d love to learn more about the frivolous things you’ve discovered lately - send me all the face masks, cute shoes and sappy movie recommendations! I’m grounded now and can’t really travel for work after this weekend so I’ll be looking for fun little treats to keep me spoiled and busy while I’m on baby watch.

Ready for the weekend? Is this the "official" end of summer? Can I wear tights next week? That's all I really need to know. When are tights acceptable again?

Some friends and I will be saying goodbye to summer by roasting at a resort in Scottsdale this weekend - celebrating a bride to be. I wish I was one of those bloggers that could share with you the adorable swimsuits that I hunted down and look amazing in, or the custom embroidered hats we'll all be wearing etc. But the real truth of it all is that I think I have 2 swimsuits I can wear. Both are full coverage, a one piece and a tankini.

Also - I'll be headed to Nordstrom this afternoon to buy the bride a gift for the lingerie shower, just about 12 hours before my departure. Because I plan ahead. I joke but it will be very fun, massages, blow-outs and cocktails galore.

Everyone I know is talking about Sephora right now. I didn't know it was a thing - this big Sephora sale but I can brag about unloading a bunch of cash on them last week because that's when all of my makeup ran out. Does that happen to you? Everything runs out at the same time? I don't buy much makeup but when I do I feel like it all comes at once.

Here's what I picked up:

The Naked 2 palette is probably one of the store's most popular items and they finally got me on it. I haven't purchased eyeshadow since before my daughter was born and she's almost 4 so I think I was due for the $54 splurge. But I'll admit I put it back once or twice before finally grabbing it on my way to the check out counter.

Now that I have it, I'm so glad I do. For some reason it feels refreshing to have new colors to play with and not to relegate yourself to whatever the next brown is in your old palette - the color you never would have used 12 months ago is now your daily shade. Doesn't feel right. Starting over does. Maybe this one will last me another 4 years.

I also picked up my favorite overnight cream posted about here, and the perfect foundation for my skin tone here.

I can't stress enough the value I have found in going into Sephora once or twice a year and letting them do their little computer scan on your face for identifying your perfect foundation shade. Foundation is completely intimidating to me and the lovely teenagers at Sephora always talk me off the ledge when I come in. I always leave with a product that works great for what my face needs at that time of year and it's never what I would have picked on my own.

In other girly news I used a job interview as an excuse to do some major shopping last weekend. Here's what I found along the way:

This red dress and suit jacket from Brooks Brothers. What do we think? Can I pull of a red on red suit? I didn't wear it for my interview because 1. it didn't arrive in time for my flight but 2. the bright red may have been seen as a bit aggressive. Now it's hanging in my closet and I'm deliberating. It's more than $100 off what I paid, so regardless I'll be headed to the store to get my price adjustment later today. FYI - Brooks Brothers will give you 10 days to adjust a price with receipt.

Let's also discuss Theory Suits. I've never been into their Domain location but man, those gals got me. I came out with this long blazer, which has a crazy good cut if you can get used to the length, as well as silk shell I never knew I needed and the matching pencil skirt. I'm also debating going back for the pants to match.

The women that work in the store are so friendly, patient and knowledgable about what their products are made out of and how they are made. For me they offered honesty in the dressing room and suggestions that I never would have considered and ended up buying. Basically they are good at their sales jobs. So you've been warned.

The cut of the long blazer is a bit trendy but looks great on and should last forever. I'm very excited about my new pieces. Plus the dressing rooms smelled like a spa and had cocktail hour lighting which I'm always on board with.

Until next week, happy #GirlFriday. It's lunch time and I'm off to adjust some receipts and buy some unmentionables.

It's Friday, let's get this weekend started. I like to start by sharing the source of something that I've personally bought, love and get lots of compliments on. If I EVER give you a compliment about something you're wearing it means I desperately want to know where it came from - end of story.  So give up the deets ladies! I'll do the same. Virtually or in person.

These bracelets from Roxanne Assoulin are wonderful. I've worn them on the weekend, I've worn them for work events when I need a little something that says I'm not 50 years old yet. They aren't cheap and honestly they are each hand enameled so they can get scratched up a bit but I love them regardless. And every single time I put them on someone asks where I bought them - honestly the only time I hesitate to share is when I'm feeling self-concious about how much I paid for them.

Do you know what the proper attire to a summer, outdoor, yet also goth wedding is? I didn't either, until now. But I think this spaghetti strap number nailed it.

I wanted to buy a very fancy dress to wear for my sister's big day but it also had to be comfortable because I was coordinating the procession and chasing a flower girl down all day sans husband.  Rather than buy a dress I rented this one. I'm still getting compliments long after the gown has been returned. And yes, you'll see it's Marchesa, but she's back. Despite marrying a POS.

In other news...

Until next week!

It's 105 degrees out but in 1 hour it will be the weekend my friends! I had a lovely lunch at epicerie with Pink Granite alum Alyse Meyer (read her interview here). I ventured beyond the borders of my comfort zone and tried the salmon toast. It was very very tasty and I took a photo to prove to my husband that I ate it. He's the healthy one - toasts usually fall within his domain.

Have you heard that Wildfang is selling "I really care, don't u?" jackets and the money goes to RAICES. Needless to say ZARA missed that boat, although the trolliness of it all is more a Wildfang move. Kudos to them.

But enough politics! Girl Friday is for the unnecessary.

This weekend wraps up a massively expensive home renovation that the Mr. and I have completed on a rental property (anyone need a house in South Austin?) and to celebrate I want to buy myself something that doesn't need to be installed at a 20% markup or eventually painted white.  In reality I'll be waiting until we get a renter in to truly celebrate with any purchases but here's what I'm dreaming about for when that sweet sweet day comes:

Reiss is having a big sale right now and I specifically need a gray dress for my sister's upcoming wedding. I'm not in the wedding but I need to coordinate as the mother of the flower girl and all. I know what you're thinking, I am basically Kate Middleton in this entire affair.

Speaking of the Reiss sale I also love this blazer for more wintery times, these nude kitten heels for anytime, and this pink number for a date night.

Speaking of the royals - Town and Country's instagram account tells me that Meghan Markle wears this lipstick so now I think I need it too.

I do love the tool on Charlotte Tilbury's website that let's you see a lipstick on a similar skin tone to yours. As a rule I actually never buy lipstick online and wouldn't advise you to do so either.  Unless Meghan Markle wears it too.

Until next Friday...
