Like many of my generation I was in college on September 11, 2001 - having just started my sophomore year. I was in between classes when I heard what had happened in New York, a place that seemed so far away, yet suddenly so incredibly close. I went back to my dorm room just to watch the news and take in all that was really going on.
If you're here in Texas I recommend visiting the George W. Bush Presidential Center in Dallas. It has an incredibly moving exhibit on the attacks that day.
September 11th changed so many lives in so many horrible ways, outright stealing thousands of them. For me, the day solidified the patriotism I was surrounded by (my dad was in the Army) and I knew I wanted to pursue a career in and around the government. The following summer I took an internship with my Congressman and would later campaign for President Bush in Florida.
When I see how hateful and divided our country can seem at times today - days like September 11th remind me of what our country is and can be. I hope everyone is reminded of this today and works a little harder at remaining kind, tolerant and proud of the amazing country we have.
